Day 1: Answering God’s call

Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows

Preparation

Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, let us make our customary devotion, meditating reverently on the most bitter sorrows that the Blessed Virgin Mary endured in the life and death of her beloved Son, our divine Savior. Let us imagine ourselves present before Jesus hanging on the Cross, and His afflicted Mother saying to each of us: “Come and see whether there is any sorrow like mine.”

Trusting that this compassionate Mother wishes to grant us special protection as we meditate on her sorrows, let us invoke divine help with the following prayers.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love.

Verse: Send forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created.

Response: And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Verse: Remember Your congregation.

Response: Which You have made Your own from the beginning.

Verse: Lord, hear my prayer.

Response: And let my cry come to You.

Let us pray.

Illuminate our minds, we ask You, Lord, with the light of Your splendor, so that we may see what we ought to do and be able to do what is right. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

First sorrow: The prophecy of Simeon

The Blessed Virgin Mother of God presented her only Son in the temple, placing Him in the arms of the holy elderly Simeon. He told her: “This will be a sword that pierces your soul,” foretelling the Passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. Then pray:

O sorrowful Virgin, by that most piercing sword with which the holy elderly Simeon foretold that your soul would be pierced in the Passion and death of your dear Jesus, I ask you to obtain for me the grace always to remember your pierced heart and the bitter suffering your Son endured for my salvation. Amen.

Second sorrow: The flight into Egypt

The Blessed Virgin had to flee into Egypt because of the persecution of cruel Herod, who wickedly sought to kill her beloved Son.

Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. Then pray:

O Mary, bitter sea of tears, by the sorrow you felt as you fled into Egypt to keep your Son safe from Herod’s barbarous cruelty, I beg you to be my guide, so that through you I may be freed from the persecution of the visible and invisible enemies of my soul. Amen.

Third sorrow: The loss of Jesus

At Passover, after going to Jerusalem with Joseph her spouse and Jesus her beloved Son, Mary lost Him as she returned to her poor home. For three days she lamented the loss of her only beloved Son.

Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. Then pray:

O desolate Mother, who, having lost the bodily presence of your Son, anxiously sought Him for three days, obtain for all sinners the grace that they too may seek Him through acts of contrition and find Him. Amen.

Fourth sorrow: Meeting Jesus carrying the Cross

The Blessed Virgin met her dear Son as He carried the heavy Cross on His tender shoulders to Mount Calvary, to be crucified for our salvation.

Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. Then pray:

O Virgin, more sorrowful than all others, by the anguish of your heart as you met your Son carrying the wood of the most holy Cross to Calvary, grant that I too may accompany Him constantly in thought and weep for my sins, which were the evident cause of His suffering and yours. Amen.

Fifth sorrow: The death of Jesus on the Cross

The Blessed Virgin saw her Son raised upon the hard wood of the Cross, His sacred body pouring out blood.

Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. Then pray:

O rose among thorns, by the bitter sorrows that pierced your heart as you saw your Son raised upon the Cross, obtain for me, I pray, that through constant meditation I may seek Jesus alone, crucified because of my sins. Amen.

Sixth sorrow: Receiving the body of Jesus

The beloved Son of the Blessed Virgin was wounded in His side after death, taken down from the Cross on which He had been so cruelly killed, and placed in her most holy arms.

Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. Then pray:

O afflicted Virgin, who received into your lap your dead Son taken down from the Cross, kissed His sacred wounds, and shed a sea of tears over them, help me also to wash continually, with tears of true remorse, the mortal wounds my sins have made. Amen.

Seventh sorrow: The burial of Jesus

Mary, our Lady and Advocate of us, her servants and miserable sinners, accompanied the most holy body of her Son to burial.

Pray one Our Father and seven Hail Marys. Then pray:

O Mary, martyr of martyrs, by the bitter torment you endured when, after your Son was buried, you had to leave His beloved tomb, obtain for all sinners the grace to recognize how greatly the soul is harmed when it is far from God. Amen.

Three Hail Marys

Pray three Hail Marys with profound reverence for the tears that the Blessed Virgin shed in all her sorrows, asking her to obtain for us a similar weeping over our sins.

Stabat Mater

The source concludes the chaplet by directing the reader to pray this hymn.

The sorrowful Mother stood weeping beside the Cross while her Son hung there.

A sword pierced her groaning soul, saddened and grieving.

How sad and afflicted was that blessed Mother of the only-begotten Son!

The loving Mother mourned and grieved as she saw the suffering of her glorious Son.

Who would not weep on seeing the Mother of Christ in such anguish?

Who could remain without sorrow while contemplating Christ’s Mother grieving with her Son?

For the sins of His people, she saw Jesus in torment and subjected to scourging.

She saw her sweet Son dying, forsaken, as He gave up His spirit.

O Mother, fountain of love, make me feel the force of your sorrow, so that I may mourn with you.

Make my heart burn with love for Christ our God, so that I may please Him.

Holy Mother, do this: impress deeply on my heart the wounds of the Crucified.

Share with me the sufferings of your wounded Son, who deigned to suffer so much for me.

Let me weep devoutly with you and grieve with the Crucified as long as I live.

I desire to stand with you beside the Cross and join you in lamentation.

Virgin most glorious among virgins, do not now be harsh with me; let me lament with you.

Let me bear the death of Christ, share in His Passion, and remember His wounds.

Let me be wounded by His wounds, filled to overflowing with the Cross and with the blood of your Son.

Lest I burn in the flames, may I be defended through you, O Virgin, on the day of judgment.

Christ, when it is time to leave this life, grant that through Your Mother I may come to the palm of victory.

When my body dies, grant that my soul may receive the glory of paradise. Amen.

The prayers used in the chaplet

Our Father

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

My Lord Jesus Christ, mighty Creator of heaven and earth, loving Redeemer of my soul, in whose sovereign hands rests the infinite power of the eternal Father: I believe in You, love and desire You above all things, and hope to receive from You the sovereign favors of divine assistance.

I, the most ungrateful and forgetful creature, deaf to Your voice, unmindful of Your benefits, and ungrateful for Your loving favors, now turn to Your infinite mercy. If my sins have stood in the way, I am sorry with all my heart, a thousand times over, for having offended You.

With the help of Your divine strength, I resolve never again to offend You in thought, word, or deed. Trusting in Your most loving word, I hope that You will forgive me and help me by Your divine grace to set out on the true and straight path of my eternal salvation. Amen.

Meditation

Consider, loving child of God, the remarkable examples of virtue set before you in the life of this wonder-working saint. Let the first be that heroic resolve and generous readiness with which he left the world and its deceptive snares to seek the straight path of eternal salvation.

In the city of Forlì, our saint was deeply attached to the Ghibelline faction. Because this faction was a widespread cause of so many evils and of the grievous harms Italy had suffered, it had been severely censured and opposed by the Apostolic See. Our saint recognized the error in which he had been living, deceived. Detesting the evil course on which his life had begun, he sought refuge in the sorrows of Mary. From the lips of our sorrowful and compassionate Mother, he was granted the command to go to the city of Siena and seek, in her beloved Servite order, the remedy for his soul.

He yielded to these words humbly, yet decisively. Neither the friendship and threats of his fellow partisans, nor the tears pouring from the hearts of his elderly parents, nor the riches of this world held him back. To all of them he responded with his remarkable obedience to heaven’s call.

Compare this readiness with your own slowness and hesitancy in responding to divine help. Have you been so ready to answer God, who calls you to your eternal good? Have you been so diligent in obeying His voice? If you have failed in this, take this holy Peregrine’s virtue as a call to amend your life, so that you may walk readily on the path to eternal glory.

Pause to consider this virtue and resolve to amend whatever has been lacking in you. Then pray:

Prayer

Heavenly and holy Peregrine, ready to heed God’s voice and diligent in answering His call, your remarkable virtue obtained from the eternal, almighty God such great progress on the path of heroic holiness.

We ask you to present your merits before the divine tribunal and obtain for us, from God’s hand, complete renunciation of the world and its deceits, a true and ready resolve to follow the path of virtue, and a spirit firmly attentive to divine help. Thus, ready to serve our God, attentive to our true good, and careful of our salvation, may we be worthy to join you in eternal glory. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows

Our sovereign Mother, Queen of angels, sorrowful Princess: you were afflicted at the circumcision of your Son, as He shed His first blood for us; troubled as you fled to Egypt because of Herod’s tyranny; sorrowful as you searched and wept for Him during the three days He was lost; desolate as you saw Him carrying the Cross, weighed down by the burden of my sins; overwhelmed with sorrow as you saw Him die on the Cross; saddened as you saw Him enclosed in the tomb; and afflicted in your solitude and bereavement.

By the weight of these sorrows, we present to you, as our Mother, the merits of your glorious son, our beloved patron St. Peregrine. Through them, obtain for us love of our God, renunciation of the world, patience in hardships, comfort in afflictions, help in our needs, humility in affronts, chastity in our actions, fervor in prayer, and steadfast progress on the path of virtue.

Thus, living in the world under your patronage, as your children and true servants, may we be worthy, through your sorrows, to live eternally in the divine joys of your everlasting company. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

1. We honor you, most sweet Virgin, for the bitterness you endured in the Passion of your Son Jesus.

Response: Protect your servants, our Lady.

2. We honor you, most loving Virgin, for the sword of sorrow that pierced your soul at the death of your Son Jesus.

Response: Protect your servants, our Lady.

3. We honor you, most beloved Virgin, for the solitude you endured at the burial of your Son Jesus.

Response: Protect your servants, our Lady.

Prayer to St. Peregrine

My glorious saint, ready to answer God’s call, conformed to His eternal will, profound in humility, firm in faith, patient in hardships, a marvel of patience in adversity, burning with divine love, intent on your salvation, compassionate and attentive to your neighbor’s good: we ask you to obtain for us the spiritual and temporal goods that lead to my salvation.

In this life you were granted God Himself as your healer, the Queen of heaven as your teacher, and a heavenly spirit as your companion. Obtain for me from our most loving Lord instruction in His divine commands, guidance along the paths of my life, and health of body and soul. If it is for the good of my soul, obtain for me what I ask especially in this novena. Amen.

Antiphon

Jesus came down from the Cross to heal His servant Peregrine. Stretching out His hand, He touched him, and Peregrine was healed at that hour.

O most blessed soul, at whose passing the citizens of heaven, Philip Benizi and Francis Patrizi, come to meet you; the choir of angels rejoices; and the glorious Mother of God invites you: “Remain with us forever.”

Verse: Pray for us, blessed Peregrine.

Response: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

O God, who wondrously gave blessed Peregrine an angel as his companion, the Mother of God as his teacher, and Jesus as the healer of his dreadful wound: through his merits, we ask that we may love the holy angel, the Virgin, and the Savior with special devotion on earth, and praise them together in heaven. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Meditation

Beloved servants of Mary, let us consider the ready conformity of her dear servant Peregrine to the will of God. Having resolved to leave the world, Peregrine sought a guide for his heroic decision in Mary, our Lady, the true way to our eternal salvation. Before her sorrowful and compassionate image venerated in Forlì, he was granted this favor from the Queen’s own lips: “You shall go to Siena and take the habit in the house of my servants, for whose way of life my Son and I have destined you.”

How great are God’s mercies and Mary’s compassion! Our holy Peregrine left Forlì. As he traveled toward Siena, he found a holy angel waiting on the road, who, as with Tobias, directed and guided him until he brought him to the threshold of the Servite convent.

Learn, my soul, to conform yourself to the divine will, turning away from this world’s deceptive snares. Consider how you have neglected to conform yourself to your God. Take Peregrine as your patron, that he may obtain for you complete conformity to God’s will.

Pause to reflect, as on the first day. Then pray:

Prayer

My holy Peregrine, faithful to God’s desires and ready to conform yourself to His will, your heroic resolve and obedience won you an angel’s companionship on the road of this life and an increase of glory in the next.

My beloved patron, we ask you to obtain before God, for all who are devoted to you, and especially for those who honor you in this devotion, a firm resolve on the path of virtue and ready conformity to our God. Thus may we make great progress on the way to our eternal salvation.

Amen.

Meditation

Devoted children of our sorrowful Queen, let us consider this evening the heroic virtue and remarkable humility of our glorious Peregrine. So great was this virtue that, as he traveled to Siena to take the Servite habit, his heart continually trembled. In his anxiety, he thought he might not have the good fortune to be admitted into Mary’s house, and that his desire might be refused because he was unworthy.

As a novice, he remained convinced that he would not be allowed to make his profession, being of no use even in the humblest place in the order. After his profession, he undertook the humblest tasks of the convent. He repeatedly declined priestly ordination, saying that he was unfit to be a minister of Jesus Christ. He submitted to the test of humility, which is obedience, bowing his neck beneath his superior’s direction. He was ordained and undertook the high ministry of preaching the Gospel.

His wisdom was exceptional, as though taught by the true Mother of all Wisdom. He was gentle in preaching, stern in correction, effective in persuasion, and learned in teaching and exposition. Yet all this was joined to such radiant humility that, if one of his listeners was dissatisfied, he did not blame that person’s ignorance, but himself and his own faults. Humbling himself before a crucifix, he asked forgiveness for his continual shortcomings.

Let us learn from Peregrine’s humility to become pilgrims in humility ourselves. Consider how greatly our pride has deceived us and how little care we have given to humility. Reflect on our failures in this virtue, and ask our holy Peregrine to obtain it for us from his most loving Jesus.

Pause to reflect. Then pray:

Prayer

Holy Peregrine, humble servant of Mary, exalted through humility, your heroic virtue obtained from your God the greatest increase in grace through your deep acknowledgment of our lowliness.

Humbly I ask you to obtain for me a ray of divine light, so that I may recognize that the statue of my pride stands on feet of clay and is in immediate danger of crumbling into dust. Through this knowledge, humbled in myself, may I be raised toward God, live humbly in this life, and obtain the reward promised to the humble: exaltation in glory.

Amen.

Amen.

Day 4: Love of God

Amen.

Hail Mary

Meditation

Our holy Peregrine possessed this heroic virtue intensely, as the foundation of all the others. The measure of the charity with which he loved God was so full that his entire soul seemed too narrow to contain it. It overflowed into his body: his joyful face at times shone with rays of light, and he was carried away in different ecstasies. His brothers were so delighted that, unable to contain themselves, they shed tears of joy at having a burning seraph in their company.

Nor did heaven fail to show this heroic act of such great love. While he was being clothed in the habit of a servant of Mary in the convent at Siena, a globe of blazing fire descended from above. Resting over the saint’s head, it filled him with light. God rewarded Peregrine’s great love with this favor, and Peregrine drew from it fresh reasons to love still more.

How differently we act: the more reasons we have, the less we devote ourselves to this perfect love! Let us recognize how deeply we have attached our hearts to the world and how little we have loved God until now. Having recognized our lukewarmness, let us ask our patron to obtain from the Lord a perfect light with which to kindle the fire of our love and our will.

Pause to reflect, as on the first day. Then pray:

Prayer

Peregrine, filled with love, in the light of your loving fire I see my error clearly. My affection should be directed toward the supreme Good, yet it is drawn away by the false goods my mistaken imagination supposes it will find in the world.

My saint, obtain from our loving God that this delusion may disappear. Through that heavenly gift of divine grace, may I love my God as the sole center of all my affections and the sole purpose of all my actions. With my soul adorned by His love, may I come to love Him for all eternity.

Meditation

From Peregrine’s great love for his God flowed his burning charity toward the poor of Jesus Christ. He saw no misery or hardship that did not stir his compassionate charity. He took great care to visit the doors of the rich, asking for alms to help those in need, becoming truly an advocate for the poor.

Every kind of need found an open door in our saint: the hungry found food; the naked, clothing; the traveler, shelter; and the helpless, support, even at the cost of his own fasting and lack of clothing.

Heaven responded gratefully to these alms with repeated miracles. When a rich man closed his ears to Peregrine’s request for help for the poor, the granary miraculously yielded an abundance of grain, and the cask an abundance of drink, at the call of his fervent prayer alone. On another occasion, he had little bread in his basket and many poor people before him who needed it. By his blessing alone, the bread was multiplied so that all were helped.

Beloved servant of Mary, consider what is lacking in you in this virtue. Ask God, through this holy Peregrine, to grant you perfect charity toward your neighbors.

Pause to reflect. Then pray:

Prayer

Compassionate Peregrine, if you were so remarkably charitable toward the poor in this world, you are still more so in the next, where you reign in power. For in reigning you have more to give, and in heaven charity and love do not diminish, but increase.

May my miseries, both spiritual and temporal, now receive your compassion. See that I am poor and in need, and in that need may I receive your patronage and protection. Charitable saint, obtain for me from your God this perfect virtue, that, living in this world in charity toward my neighbor, I may attain perfect charity in glory. Amen.

Amen.

Meditation

Loving servant of Mary, consider Peregrine’s zealous work for the greatest good of his neighbor. Through his effective sermons, he freed souls from the illusions of worldly amusements. He also worked to reconcile enemies and put an end to their resentments, so that vice might be uprooted and virtue planted in their hearts.

Let this remarkable event serve as evidence of his zeal. He learned that forty assassins had arrived near Forlì, robbing those they met of their goods and their lives. He went fearlessly to them. Although their savage cruelty led them to attempt the same against our saint, his words were so effective that they were changed, surrendered their weapons to him, and accepted the course he wished for them.

His wish was that, as robbers, they should fear heaven’s justice. They believed him so fully that they sought refuge in repentance. For this deed and others like it, our saint was called the Apostle of Romagna. Consider this virtue in Peregrine and reproach yourself for your own lack of charity.

Pause to reflect. Then pray:

Prayer

Peregrine, apostle, how great is the distance between you and me! You sought to save souls by word and example; I have led them astray by scandal. You were fervent, while I am so lukewarm toward my neighbor.

Pray for me before God, and obtain for me burning charity and zeal, so that I may seek the good of souls, especially my own. May I live according to the divine law in this world, be kept from sin by grace, and attain eternal life.

Amen.

Meditation

This evening we should contemplate Peregrine’s burning faith and steadfast confidence. His habitual prayer was to contemplate the greatness of God’s goodness and infinite mercy. On their firmness he founded his confidence with such assurance that he held it certain that God would attend even to the most obstinate sinner who approached Him with repentance.

This moved him to weep over his own sins. Watered by so many tears, his faith grew so greatly that, by making the Sign of the Cross over the sick, he restored them to health. Those who were blind, deaf, unable to speak, lame, paralyzed, and suffering from every kind of illness were healed at Peregrine’s touch, for his faith gave him this power.

My soul, you are sick through your little faith and your little confidence in God. Weep over your sickness and ask Peregrine for healing.

Pause to reflect. Then pray:

Prayer

My Peregrine, my hope fails from moment to moment as I see my faith almost lost. I take refuge in you and place myself before you, that you may obtain from God a remedy for my troubles.

Warm my lukewarm faith, so that my petitions may reach the Most High with the certainty and confidence with which you present them. May what I ask of you in this novena not be denied, provided I do not ask wrongly in relation to God or my eternal salvation. Amen.

Beloved servant of Mary, it is not possible to recount at length the extraordinary penances of our holy Peregrine. But if rivers have a voice, as David says, then the rivers of tears with which he watered his face in his daily confessions would proclaim them. His strict and prolonged fasts would tell of them, as would the piercing hairshirts that drew blood from his body and the harsh scourging that bled his veins, leaving him looking like a standing skeleton rather than a living man.

Not content with such austerity, he added to these mortifications that of always remaining on his feet, neither sitting by day nor lying down by night. He persevered so firmly in this suffering that he prolonged it for thirty years, astonishing the whole world by such unheard-of severity. He took his meager food standing or kneeling, so as to continue his penance with greater strength, asking God without ceasing to add fuel to his devotion so that the ardor with which he mortified himself would not go out.

Question your heart about its lack of this virtue. Consider that, while Peregrine becomes ever more penitent, you become ever more given over to sin. Present these penances of Peregrine before God, that He may grant what you ask in this novena.

Pause to reflect. Then pray:

Prayer

Penitent Peregrine, your matchless penances put me to shame, and your tears overwhelm me when I see that I have not begun to weep for my sins or restrain my excesses.

I hope you will not deny me your protection, especially as I resolve to quench, with the water of my tears, the fire of divine anger that I have fanned with the stains of my sins. My saint, help me fulfill this resolve for the service of God and the good of my soul.

Amen.

Day 9: Patience

Amen.

Meditation

Beloved servants of Mary, we now come to consider Peregrine’s exceptional patience. His conversion from the excommunicated Ghibelline faction to the flock of the Catholic Church tested every measure of patience and endurance.

What insults did he not suffer from those who had once joined him in rebellion? They poured mockery upon him, calling him false, treacherous, cowardly, and inconstant, condemning his evident virtue as pretended hypocrisy. Yet his answer to these affronts was to ask God for more insults and hardships.

It was fitting that he who opened heaven to the petitions of his neighbor should not find it closed to his own. God sent a cancerous wound to his leg, granting him this bitter trial. He found no rest by day or by night. Moreover, the wounds gave off such an odor that his fellow religious could not bear it, leaving him greatly abandoned.

Yet who saw Peregrine sad? Who could testify to having heard even one cry or complaint? He blessed and praised God because, by covering him with wounds, God made him in some way like His only-begotten Son. This was how he bore his troubles. The people, marveling at such patience, began to call him another holy Job. After receiving this honor from the people, he was granted a favor from God: Christ came down from the crucifix to heal him.

Consider your own little endurance and Peregrine’s great patience. Reflect on this briefly, so that you may make your petition to our saint.

Pause to reflect. Then pray:

Prayer

Peregrine of extraordinary patience, I see your heroic patience and am astonished. I reflect on your endurance and marvel at it when I consider my own little endurance and impatience.

Help me, my saint, so that adversities may not throw me into turmoil and illnesses may not embitter me. Grant me, at last, patience to bear the hardships of this world and attain my salvation in the next.

About this novena

Prayer Library translation · Seville, circa 1752; chaplet supplement, 1871

This is Prayer Library’s new English translation of Antonio Urbano de Cárdenas’s historical Peregrine novena, Seville, circa 1752. The library dates the undated edition from its printing licences of April 20, 1752. Its prayer section has nine distinct days and common prayers used after each day; the English day headings identify the original themes. This version replaces the earlier Prayer Library plan and does not translate the modern Lovasik novena.

Each day, pray the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, make the Sign of the Cross, and pray the act of contrition. Read the day’s meditation, pause, and pray its petition. Then pray the prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows, three Hail Marys, the three Marian invocations, the common Peregrine petition, the antiphon, and the closing prayer. All are printed in that order below.

The original recommends confession and Communion on the first day or at least one other day, and directs the reader to kneel before an image of Our Lady of Sorrows. It prescribes a daily Corona Dolorosa but does not print its text. Here the separately identified 1871 chaplet is included before each day; it is a later supplement, not a text recovered from the 1752 booklet. The two sources list Mary’s sorrows differently and neither is rewritten to match the other.

The meditations preserve the historical author’s devotional accounts, including miracles and severe penances; they are not independently verified biography. The penances described in Day 8 are historical descriptions, not directions to repeat those bodily practices. Accounts of healing do not establish an outcome for anyone praying today. Prayer can accompany medical treatment and practical care. The Marian invocations use “We honor you” for the old Spanish expression of veneration. The abbreviated closing response and named Hail Marys are expanded into complete traditional formulas.

Does each day have a different prayer?

Yes. The historical source gives nine different meditations and petitions. The chaplet, act of contrition and common closing prayers repeat.

Is the full sequence included when printing?

Yes. Print all 9 days includes all nine readings, the identified later chaplet before each day, the complete accompanying prayers, and the source notes.
