St. Dymphna Prayer Plan
The daily prayer changes each day. The accompanying prayers are repeated.
Day 1: Bringing distress into prayer
Heavenly Father, I pray for those carrying distress that is difficult to explain. You know the weight of their days and the effort it can take to ask for help. Let them be met with patience and compassion.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, help them find trustworthy support and appropriate care. Give their loved ones wisdom to listen without blame. I bring you my intention today and ask that no one who is suffering be left to carry it alone. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace! the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Day 2: Finding someone to listen
Lord Jesus, I pray for people who have tried to speak about their struggles and have not felt heard. Help them find someone who will listen carefully and take their needs seriously.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, give friends, families, and caregivers patience to understand before they offer answers. Teach me to make room for another person’s experience. Let an honest conversation become a beginning of support, rather than another reason for someone to withdraw. Amen.

Day 3: Courage to seek care
Father, help those who need care but feel afraid, ashamed, or unsure where to begin. Give them a trustworthy person to speak with and a clear next step. Remove practical obstacles where help is difficult to reach.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, bless clinicians, counselors, and everyone who offers patient support. Give them wisdom and attentiveness. Help us speak about mental health with dignity, so that asking for care can be met with respect rather than judgment. Amen.

Lord, I pray for those whose strength is limited today. An ordinary task may feel large, and progress may be hard to recognize. Grant them patience with themselves and kind support from the people around them.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, help them take a manageable next step and receive rest without shame. Keep those who care for them from demanding more than they can give. Let love be expressed through steady, considerate attention. Amen.

Day 5: Support for families
Heavenly Father, I pray for families learning how to support someone in distress. Help them listen, seek good guidance, and respond with care rather than fear. Where misunderstandings have hurt their relationships, open a path toward repair.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, give each person patience and a place to speak honestly. Help caregivers receive support of their own. May this family become a source of companionship, with respect for each person’s needs, dignity, and limits. Amen.

Day 6: Freedom from shame
God of compassion, I pray for those who feel ashamed of their suffering or believe they must conceal it to be accepted. Help them know that needing care does not lessen their dignity.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, guide them toward people who respond with understanding. Correct the unkind assumptions in my own heart and words. Teach our communities to welcome those whose struggles are visible and those whose burdens remain hidden. Let compassion make it easier to seek support. Amen.

Day 7: Rest and steadiness
Lord Jesus, I pray for those who find it difficult to rest, and for those worn down by ongoing distress. Grant them moments of quiet and attentive care from people who understand their needs.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, help their daily life become more supported and less isolated. Give wisdom to those assisting them with ordinary responsibilities. May small, dependable acts of kindness bring steadiness to today, without requiring anyone to pretend that everything is already well. Amen.

Day 8: Hope through setbacks
Father, a setback can make earlier progress feel distant. I pray for those who are discouraged today and for the people walking beside them. Help them recognize the support that remains available and the good that has not been lost.
Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, renew their courage to speak honestly and seek help again. Give caregivers patience with a path that may be uneven. Let hope be sustained by faithful companionship and thoughtful care. Amen.

Through the intercession of St. Dymphna, grant wisdom for the days ahead and companions who remain patient. May those in distress receive care that honors their dignity. Help our community make room for honest conversation, ongoing support, and the needs of every person. Amen.

About this prayer plan
Prayer Library plan · Original English daily prayers
This nine-day practice was composed for Prayer Library. Pray the day’s petition followed by one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be, all printed below. The daily petition changes; the accompanying prayers repeat. This is different from the National Shrine of St. Dymphna booklet and does not translate its litany or nine-day prayers. These petitions ask for compassion, support and wise care without treating mental illness as a moral failure or promising a cure. Prayer can accompany professional care and practical support.
Pray today’s petition, then one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be. All four prayers are printed below.
Which version is this?
This is our own nine-day prayer practice. It is not a translation of the National Shrine of St. Dymphna novena.
Can I print all nine days?
Yes. Print all 9 days includes the complete prayers for every day and the source information. You can also save a PDF through your browser’s print dialog.
